The ECHO project
The working group of the Interreg ITA-CH ECHO project brings together a network of private companies, professionals, research centers and local organizations united by a common goal: to protect and restore the aquatic ecosystems of Lake Como and Lake Lugano. At the heart of our mission is the environmental restoration of lake waters, carried out through targeted ecological interventions, shared strategies for sustainable management and coordinated monitoring.
The ECHO project promotes an integrated, cross-border approach, fostering collaboration between Italy and Switzerland to revitalize lake environments, strengthen territorial resilience to climate change, and raise environmental awareness among local communities.
Together, we work to build a more sustainable and harmonious future between man and nature.

Transnational action
The project provides a contribution to the fight against climate change on a territorial scale, operating at a transnational level (Italy and Switzerland) in the natural environments that most characterize the Insubric area: the lakes.

Restoration and Carbon
The action combines environmental restoration and active removal of anthropogenic carbon. The project aims to restore submerged macrophyte forests in lakes for the conservation and implementation of the main ecosystem services that lakes can offer: biodiversity and carbon storage in the sediment.

Ecosystem Resilience
The restoration of submerged forests is designed to provide a valid and rapid tool for mitigation and response (RESILIENCE) of lake ecosystems, which are affected by the loss of oxygen in the deep layers due to an increase in surface temperatures.
Where is it located
The ECHO project is implemented with the support of the Interreg Programme and the United Nations
